The Oath of the Horatii
The Oath of the Horatii (1784-1785, Louvre, Paris) by Jacques-Louis David was one of a number of paintings commissioned by Louis XVI that were intended to be used to improve public morality through art. The scene shows the three Horatii brothers vowing to sacrifice their lives for their country and is clearly influenced by classical Roman art. The painting is 4.27 by 3.35 m (14 by 11 ft).
